The most popular type of cosmetic tattoo is by using a laser. This procedure began in the 1980’s and has continued to become more and more popular. It may take several sessions to completely clear up the area where the tattoo once was.

The excision procedure is one that many people avoid. The skin is actually removed where the tattoo is and then stitched back up. This is usually only possible on small tattoo’s. If you want a tattoo removed I would avoid this method if at all possible.

Dermabrasion is another cosmetic tattoo procedure that works by sloughing off the top layers of the skin to remove the ink pigment and skin that has been effected by the tattoo ink. This method encourages new skin to grow. This can be done salt, sandpaper, or caustic acids. This can be painful so a local anesthetic is usually applied before the treatment. Occasionally people experience pain for a couple of days after their session.
